
Pasture Diversification and Management to Promote Climate Resistance and Resilience
About the Project
This project is supported through the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), under the Natural Heritage Trust’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Program (CSAP) – Partnerships and Innovation grants. CSAP aims to support Australia’s agriculture sector to drive climate-smart, sustainable growth, and protect Australia’s natural capital by funding best practice sustainable agriculture and natural resource management activities.
Our project, led by the University of Western Australia, with partners across universities, government, and industry, focuses on improving the resilience and sustainability of Australia’s pasture systems.
Projects involve the development, trialling, adoption and roll-out of climate-smart, sustainable, innovative tools and on-ground farm practices that increase the agriculture sector’s productivity and profitability.
Our project stakeholders include farmers, agricultural technology end-users, industry advisors, agronomists, agricultural researchers, community and indigenous groups, and government policy and program managers.

Australian agriculture faces growing climate risks. By building evidence for sustainable, productive practices, this project will help farmers and industry adapt while protecting natural capital.

What We’re Doing
Over five years (2025–2028), the project team will:

Trial diversified pastures to improve soil health and climate resilience in medium and low rainfall regions.

Test soil amendments and waste-derived fertilizers to enhance pasture establishment, productivity, and persistence.

Develop innovative effluent and manure management approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses.

Apply soil health indicator tools and advanced modelling to assess environmental and economic outcomes.

Work alongside First Nations partners to incorporate traditional knowledge and co-develop solutions.
